The Orphanage project in Uganda is dedicated to creating a new home for 16 orphans aged 6-13 near Jinja Town. For this purpose, the association collected “Help for Self-Help Walldorf e.V.” Donate to purchase a plot of land including fencing. Construction of the first habitable house began as early as October 2018. The children come from the poorest backgrounds, are in need of protection and are usually also traumatised. The emergence of the new orphanage ensures that these children can grow together with their newfound siblings to form a family. This protective environment can ensure that these children have access to a basic education. So far, there has been no power supply in the children’s building, so the aforementioned association has applied for a solar kit with lighting systems for the orphanage from Abiola in May 2019.

Solution for transporting the battery on an airplane

Within a few days, the donation of the SolarKit of Abiola was promised. Alexander Badak of the association (pictured right) announced a visit to the orphanage in May 2019 He initially wanted to take the Abiola Turbo Charger 60W on the plane. Later, however, the following was clarified:

A) In the 60W system is a 24 Ah lithium battery. Under no circumstances can this be transported in the suitcase, as a battery must be declared as hazardous material.

(b) In the cockpit of an aircraft, only batteries with a limited capacity may be taken with you. Some airlines accept a performance of 160 Wh, some only 100 Wh. With a previous request, more may also be possible.

c) The battery of a Turbocharger has a capacity of 24 Ah * 11.1 V = 266.4 Wh, so basically too much for carrying in the cockpit. The capacity of a Chargers 30W has 14 Ah * 11.1 V = 155.4 Wh and could thus be taken with Lufthansa. That’s why we decided to use only the little Charger. Also because mainly the lighting in the orphanage should be covered (see handover at Abiola Lager).

Alexander had declared the battery inside the device when checking in at the airport and was given permission to board the battery without any problems. This could also be the case with the TurboCharger. You can’t rely on that, though.

D) If you want to play it safe, then you can ship either the TurboCharger or the previously developed battery and by airmail. A prior request to the airline is recommended, perhaps there are other possibilities.

As early as June 12, 2019, Alexander sent out the image above, signaling that the new light from solar energy was adopted with astonishment and admiration at the orphanage.

We hope for many more similar projects in collaboration with a non-profit association organization. Abiola can donate many more SolarKits this year. The Abiola camp is currently well filled.
